LOL Jacob,

I've been reading your blog for a while now and I learned many things, but this list is really hilarious and at the same time sad and true.
About using a credit card..not necessary is a bad thing, depending how you do it. Nowadays credit/debit cards have rewards and I think as long as you pay off your high interest credit card you are fine , even better making a few $ without doing any work. :)

I take issue with 5. Using a credit card. I've earned several hundred dollars this year putting business and personal expenses on a 2% back rewards card while paying no annual fee or interest charges. Everything effectively costs me more by using cash, not to mention the hassle, time, potential ATM fees and security risks of obtaining and carrying cash. Plus I have recourse against a merchant if they don't deliver (I actually had to do that for a $1000 business purchase).

Wow, this is so hilarious, Jacob! Thank you for the great laugh! I needed it!
Too bad so many people live this way. It is what I think got us into the great depression our country is now experiencing.
On a serious note, the reason I don't think people write blogs about it is because they don't think about it. It is second nature to them and so, as you said, they "Just Do It (tm)"

(to expand on drag)

21 - Your bonus/raise is for spending. You earned it, treat yourself!
22 - Never talk about money to anyone, it is a sign of weakness.
23 - You don't enjoy cooking, why should you? McDonalds is right around the corner.
24 - You need a bigger house in order to entertain the guests that you will throw parties for.
25 - The more electronics your new appliance has, the better!
26 - Remember that credit is good because having it allows you to buy more things. Use your credit card for everything, including your bills and mortgage (if you can). Pay off as much of it as you can, after you are done buying.
27 - Never forget that you are getting a raise next year, so buy the biggest/best house/appliance/car that you can.
28 - Talking about investing is bragging, and it is rude. Never do it.
29 - Better yet, never invest, because it means that you have to give up spending money today (which you can talk/brag about).

25 rant - I've had 2 coworkers tell me about the 'features' on their (new) washing machines in the last week. I prefer "spinnning basket on top of mechanical motor, both easily repaired, and reliable". I was told that this doesn't get clothes as clean... ?

That's a great list, but you forgot to mention a few others:

16. Never save for retirement; your retirement is someone else's problem. If you get a windfall or a raise, make sure to increase your spending on yourself and others to match your increased cash flow.

17. Never pay bills on time, and never balance your checkbook. Only nerdy accountants do stuff like that. You should welcome ATM charges, late fees, overdraft fees, etc.

18. If you somehow didn't follow #16, or have more money than you can possibly spend at this moment, make sure to check your inbox for emails about penny stocks and moving money out of Nigeria, and follow the instructions exactly, since everything you read on the internet is true. Then get a bigger house to fit all the new stuff you'll buy once you get rich quick.

19. If anything breaks, including major appliances or vehicles, don't spend even a second trying to figure out whether it can be fixed. Just put the old one in your garage, then run out and buy a new one (on credit, of course!).

20. If you buy a home, make sure it's the most expensive one in a bad neighborhood, don't worry about gaping flaws, don't get any inspections or insurance, and be sure to get a complicated mortgage with a teaser rate and balloon payments you don't understand with no money down.

20. Make sure to invest heavily into that 401k and keep working until it's well above $2 Million. When you retire at age 75+, you will feel safe and secure knowing you can now afford a cost of living of $100k+. Then, Travel the world in orbit. The new cancer virus drug will keep you alive when your in the hospital watching TV and eating pepperoni pizza. When writing your will, buy a $2million dollar car and give it to your children to make them happy and thankful.

Dang..... Jacob for President! If we can enact a bill to push these measures, the economy will speed up in no time! In fact, I am going to start spending that stock market gain right now....

(and where can I get my "pop" for 45 cents in a vending machine? It was 75 cents the other day. No WAY I paying $3.50 for a 12 pack when its only 75 cents to satisfy my needs right now ... :-)

@blah - I swear I am the lone holdout in my group of friends - the rest of them all have iPhones.

Rant 1) I was in the AT&T store last weekend and a Mom was in there asking about the iPhone 4 for her 2 daughters, who couldn't have been more than 15. Sadly, they were out of stock.

Rant 2) I was at our neighborhood pool a few weeks ago swimming with my son. 2 teenage girls came in to swim, jumped in the pool for about five minutes, flirted with the lifeguard and then went over to check their Facebooks on their iPhones for about another half hour.

Actually, I just realized, it is because your pun is 1984 and animal farm morphed into one. Very clever!
It is so scary though that all that you make fun of here is totally true of most of society and doesn't make any sense to me! In my observation it doesn't matter what income level people are at either, in that I have seen people with a wide variety of incomes act that way.

I love the allusions to, the Coke vs Pepsi wars in the 80's, Nike, and best of all 1984! Frugal baaaahd, consumerism goood. :)
Um OK, now I feel stupid, I mean the other one of Orwell's great classics, animal farm. :/
Too much reading and not enough passively watching TV must be frying my brain. No one that watched TV too much would have likely made that mistake! :)
