I agree about rich dad, poor dad. I do not know if the information in that book was good or not but without reading it I wouldn't have been kicked into action about my money. :)

I just found your blog, and though I can't get on board with all your ideas (who can?), I like your content a lot.

However, I must say that I couldn't disagree more with Rich Dad, Poor Dad. That guy is a snake oil salesman and deserves zero respect.

Those are two good books, for sure - but I think the values expressed in Rich Dad Poor dad are appalling - no empathy for people with less. To me, financial security allows one to be philanthropic, or be involved in microfinancing people born into grinding poverty.
The best summary of financial strategy vs. quality of life is Jeff Brown's final column in the Philadelphia Inquirer. I believe it's no longer archived, so fortunately I have the whole column in an early post on my blog. It's a great mantra!

I haven't used it as investment advice either. And I agree completely with your sentiments on doing your own research, now if only I could phrase that in legalese and put it up as a disclaimer.

I love Rich Dad, Poor Dad, too. It's not a manual or a set of instructions. It's an inspirational book, and should be read as such. Anyone who wants specific directions on getting rich needs to do their own research and not just expect to pick up a book and get rich. I love RDPD for what it did for changing my perspective - but I didn't use it as investment advice!

Very interesting series of posts - you have an unusual story!

I found out about Millionaire Next Door much later (two years ago) and it is also a good book. (It would be my third PF book pick). Finding it late did not bring many new revelations to my table, but one important message is to find a spouse who agrees on the financial goals and not get divorced.

Funny notes from MND:
First generation immigrants seem to be better off financially that native born citizens. However, the second generation immigrants has already reverted to average. I think this is easily explained. It takes a certain entrepreneurial spirit to leave your home country in search of opportunities. Incidentally, I'm a first generation immigrant BTW so I got something to live up to.

Car shopping by fax. "I am looking for a XXX YYY ZZZ car. I am willing to pay cash. Fax me your best offer. And don't call me. I'll call you!"

And the best quip: "I only drink two kinds of beer, Budweiser and free".
