I just skip town for xmas. I take the money I would have spent on gifts and go somewhere warmer and relax in the sun with my book. I love driving past the mall in the months leading up to xmas watching the people shop like crazed consumers, grateful that I don't have to go inside to do battle with them. Going out of town helps friends and relatives understand that you really don't want to receive gifts.

Hi, Jacob, one thing I've started doing is donating to charities. Donating my TIME.

IE I volunteer as a gift. I have no out of pocket, the recipient get no extra junk/clutter and an orginization (and I chose one no one could object to) gets a great benefit.

EVERYONE WINS!

I am not wealthy, but I do live with someone who is (more than I), and while he does buy himself basically whatever his modest wants require, you can never quite stay on top of the new video game releases, so I get him those. Then I get ignored for 24 hours while he beats, oh, say, Mass Effect.
