@Chef - Mine is 6 miles each way. It takes about 20-25 minutes. I was not a serious cyclist, but I was a serious athlete. It took me about a month not to feel tired by adding that workload on top. Of course I could have gone slower. One thing I noticed was that initially my legs got bigger to adapt to the new load and after a while they got smaller and leaner to get more efficient. (Biological overcompensation and adaption).

How far is your commute? I am moving to a new location that will be approximately 8 miles from work. I'm curious how long it will take me to get there and how long it will take me to build up that endurance seeing as how I'm not a serious biker currently.

@DJ - sadly there are no rents available at that rate around here otherwise I'd probably pick the commute as well.

@Fiscal Musings - The 100F commutes are fun. My work environment is very casual so I feel overdressed when I wear slacks+shirt, so in summers it's usually shorts and t-shirt. Sweat is not a big problem around here. The humidity is quite low so it tends to evaporate right off. Actually for longer rides, this leaves a white surface of salt.

I wouldn't mind riding my bike to work if it were a little closer to where I live. I also wouldn't like showing up to work covered in sweat having just ridden through 100 degree weather.

Twenty years ago, I lived in a situation where bike commuting was practical. I still have fond memories of that. I'm glad you are enjoying it....

There are always trade offs in life. I live in a beautiful mountain town where my mortgage is $582 a month, but I have to drive 45 minutes every time I go anywhere. I could bike to work (in heavy traffic) if I lived closer and spent $1500 a month to rent a place I don't like at all. Life has it's trade offs.

It is wise to live frugally so you can have more choices in life.

It's a beautiful thing. I always have similar thoughts: those dumb pukes are paying good money (car, fuel, time) to see my ass rip past them every morning. (They likely say something about me to themselves on wet mornings.)

Your commute is awesome. I'm someplace right now where I can look down and see an old highway that was converted to a bike highway. It's amazing to see lanes of traffic and hear horns honking and see hundred of people leisurely riding their bikes or walking and talking while the rest of the world is angrily gripping their steering wheels.
