There’s a fifth option, though it’s a bit of a mix between options 1 and 5. It involves selling your books to a local used bookstore. They’re almost always privately owned and have some sort of a buyback program. The one next to my house will pay $1.50 in cash or $3 in store credit for a book they like (no textbooks, no writing in the book, overall good condition). I know you don’t shop at book stores, but that store credit is usually given in the form of a gift card, and thus can be given to a friend (or DW! lol).

Another thing you can do, if you just *gotta* buy another book, is sell your books to Powells.com. Instead of sending you money they give you a store credit. This option, of course, is only gonna make sense if you buy fewer books than you sold.

Just a reminder that OF COURSE you should also buy your books used. Much cheaper and of course a better environmental choice, since you’re reusing. I use fetchbook.info all the time.

Out of curiosity, are the books you're interested in hard to get just in your local library or via their Interlibrary Loan Program also? (I'm assuming they have a free interlibrary loan program?)

I usually remember where I read something (down to the location on the page), but I don’t remember the details exactly.

This is my ability to a T! I don’t like getting rid of books, and this is a problem for me. I have so many books! I wrote about how I would get rid of them during the Simplicity Challenge but I haven’t done it, and I don’t want to. The biggest reason is that the books that I own I reference ALL THE TIME – literally. In conversations with friends, when writing… I have a load of books I haven’t read, either. This will be part of the next challenge – to read more of what’s on my shelves.

I haven’t tried it yet, but you can also sell books to Powell’s online. You type in each book’s ISBN number, and they give you Virtual Credit for books they buy from you. They also provide you with a prepaid shipping label: http://www.powells.com/sys/obb_main.cgi#labels
