@steve - I've previously quoted $200/month to make the hassle+red tape fees worth it. As for the affiliate link on the right sidebar, that's just me advertising for free (well, I get one credit each time someone signs up).

@elizabeth - I would mainly select advertising for its visual impact that is to say I would try to minimize the impact. Blogs where it is hard to find the actual post annoy me. Sponsored posts are less in your face. Actually, it's not like they tell you what you write (unlike payperpost and similar), rather the sponsors want your google juice e.g. links to get higher google search rankings. Paying for it is often easier to building up a popular site.

Yes, you're definitely lazy. Good luck on that 100K bike ride in May!

For some reason, ads on blogs don't bother me. I hate advertising in almost every other medium. I did just unsubscribe from an otherwise good blog because the blogger frequently did sponsored posts, but I assume you'd never stoop to that level.

I'm not-so-secretly hoping that the income/effort ratio never brings in advertising here. Reading a blog is rather enjoyable without other noise. What is "Affiliates", by the way?

What would it take to keep you ad-free, if at some point you decide the income/effort ratio might be worth the noise?
