When talking about debt free, most young people I meet think about credit card bills that they can't pay and most middle aged people think about mortgage payments they must make for years together going forward. And they hate the situation in which they are in.

It bothers me that a lot of people miss the fact that if you manage debt well, it can add more assets and help you lead a better life. Only when debt is abused or you stretch beyond your means you fall into trouble.

@john - There's still maintenance costs (about 30% of what the rent would be, at least academically) and property taxes, which can be particularly insidious for a retiree on a fixed income in an real estate bubble.

We won't be childless until 58! That's 16 years from now.

We plan on being 100% debt free long before then.

I agree, if you can get rid of all payments, you are waaaay ahead of the game. Plus, not having to pay for your residence is awesome

I feel that my mortgage is a chain around my neck, meaning that my husband and I have to work and be frugal. I am hoping to be mortgage free before I am 40 and I do not intend to have any more debts. The feeling must be fantastic!
