We do a yearly sale with our neighbors; we block off the street and make a day of it with a BBQ at the end…. Last year we, personally, made $950, we had many personal items… We did it again this past weekend, and made $450 will lots of much cheaper items… We had groups of people coming throughout 9-4. Our neighbors also had productive sales.

I advertised in Craigslist and put up signs at the local grocery store. We put up two street signs, and I rented a 10′x10′ tent for my stuff since it was supposed to storm all day, which it did not. I had plenty of horizontal space for my stuff consisting of an old desk and small tables, which also were sold.

I advertised on craigslist but not in the local newspaper. Not sure if it made a difference.

We used the garage sale to try to get rid of things in the range between freecycle and craigslist e.g. things we wouldn’t give away but on the other hand couldn’t charge more than 5 dollars for.

I think Craig’s list and Freecycle have cut into the success of garage sales. What people do hear is say they’re including free items in their sales and post them on Freecycle.
