I read this again after taking my break from blogging and see how very true it is. Like anything else people can either "graduate" or all grow together. Either option is great and better when the money issue doesn't control the outcome.

On the other hand, many bloggers are more like sessional lecturers: excluded from most financial and intellectual rewards, unlikely to do better in the future, but unwilling to try something else because they fear the unknown and are heavily invested in their current identities.

@jacq - I love teaching as long as I got students who are willing to learn. Such students are hard to find these days though. They're definitely a minority at the universities.

@Rob - I guess I haven't said anything yet that could cause someone to lose "rent".

The internet was and is a boon to anyone with a brain. It used to be much harder to find like-minded people. Now it's comparably easy albeit still hard in the sense of reaching those who don't know what they're looking for---don't know which terms to search for.

Funny, interesting article. You are a Thinker, Jacob! I warn you -- One of these days they are going to get you for that!

I fall into the "researcher" category. I just love learning new things. Love it, love it, love it!

I don't think that too many people appreciate the power of this new communications medium for research purposes. It's huge. You can put any idea out before the world and get feedback from all kinds of people and then refine the idea and re-present it. It has never been possible to do this before! We have entered a whole new age.

If only we knew it.

But my "research" on this question has not caught on just yet!

Problogging seems like a cruel day job to me and I don't get the fascination with it.

I have a hard time being excited about telling people how to lower their costs, possibly because I've done it for so many years that it's just an automatic thing. There's that mindset of: look I told you once, just do what I said and stop looking for answers, put your energy into doing, not learning because there is no magic bullet here - just a daily slog of making choices.

I had the impression that you are a born teacher.

"(hint: people tend to like people that are much like themselves)" Sadly, this seems to be a big part of the human condition. I do try to step out and listen to people I know that I will absolutely disagree with and enjoy the lively discussion following. There are few who can do this with dignity and respect. Some nights I like to watch Fox and then MSNBC just to see the contrast of supposedly "fair and balanced" views of the same subject.

Hmmm. Well, I'm a professor and, it's true, at times I take comfort in repetition. But I can change things whenever I want.

Some of my favorite PF bloggers stopped blogging--so I think you are right about boredom setting in.
