My husband and I share the same super frugal RV lifestyle ideals that you do, and we can totally relate. Our feelings toward simple living have become even stronger since we started traveling 18 months ago.

This week especially, as we visit family and friends back in our hometown for the first time since we left, it's very interesting to see how people are so enamored with their new "stuff," and love to show it off. What they usually don't see is the real cost of pursuing it.

We used to be exactly the same though. But simplifying and living smaller has given us a whole new perspective on the pursuit of "stuff," and we've never been happier.

Keep on rollin'.

@yvie - The $250 is rent alone. (We pay $475 for two persons). Obviously for Canada an RV is not the best choice. When you live with someone, they don't remain strangers for long.

Paying that much in municipal taxes sounds like torture to me. As long as we keep prioritizing our needs rather than our wants --- yes, some consider that Spartan, I consider it sensible to spend more money on average on things I use daily and spend less or nothing (there's the kicker!) on things I use less than weekly rather than the other way around --- then in six or seven years (3-4 if I keep working for income), the wife will be financially independent as well. She talks about visiting the 50 states; I'll go along with that although my dream is to cruise the Caribbean on my own sailboat; maybe afterwards. As you say to each their own ;-)

Living on 200-250 a month is what I would consider living in squalor. A person paying such a living cost is rooming with many strangers, sponging off family, or I guess, like you, living in an RV. If someone owns their own home they would be paying municipal taxes to more than that amount . Here in Canada where we freeze each winter, RV living sounds like torture. (but at least we don't have to worry about health insurance...)

Well Jacob, to each his own, I guess. I hope your wife is as happy as you are living such a spartan existence. Because if not, you'll end up losing half of your assets in a divorce and would end up further behind.

Just another way of looking at things,

I gather the $6000 does not include your shelter requirements.

You can wear all the old clothing you want, gradually reduce your spending on items and eat cheaply, but you still have to live somewhere.

Just wondering,

As you say, people who live on less money can look exactly the same as normal people. Also, many people who are millionaires also look like normal people too.

Essentially, most people look like normal people because that's exactly what they are - people!

Great post and well done on not just going out and spending money on stuff. I too have decided recently that if something is worth buying, it's worth buying quality since you know it'll last longer.

Frugality doesn't come natural to me, but I got into the habit on my clothes after a crazy shopping binge in 1994. I don't buy much except for some running t-shirts when I got serious about it, which I should've avoided. And running helped me wear some old trousers when my waistline receded.

I do try being frugal, but I tend hit some occasional binges which kind of blows away all the previous effort. It feels like dieting to get fit sometimes.

I'm going through this same fight in my office now. They want to spend $12k ish on a new scanner/copier/fax when we have already have 2 dedicated copiers and 4 printer/faxes. ALL of them are scanners. Their brilliance is amazing. :D

Jacob - just wanted to say thanks for making me think about priorities. I was becoming caught up in the day to day and forgot to keep an eye on the long-term. This blog, along with The Simple Dollar and a book I'm currently reading have opened my eyes to what needs and wants really are.

Keep up the good work.
