Jacob--as for your post on being a 'slumlord,' if I didn't know you were Danish (I'm convinced your telling the truth), I would suspect you were related to me!

My dad is in real estate and studies many kinds of properties so he can report to banks how much they earn etc. Mobile home parks earn really well if done right. Anyway, my dad and my brothers have been going on and on about buying one of these and becoming slum lords. I think that your idea of a plot of land for farming is a good one. If there's something you can do to ensure security for the people there, it's another important factor. Also, common gathering/playing area and laundry facilities are things my dad mentioned as ideal. This is now a very timely thing since people are loosing their houses and moving to . . . you guessed it.

DH and I are actually going to visit a similar set up over the winter break in France--a tract of tiny homes near the Italian Alps. Should be interesting.

Jacob, DH and I have a food-rating system. Since I'm the budget whip and the cook in the house, I wanted to make sure I didn't go overboard on being a cheap-o. So I cook and my husband, who has no idea how much each meal costs, rates the meals on a scale of 1-5. I figure it keeps us honest on taste versus cost. DH's favorite meal so far: lentils! I make dahl as you suggested or more traditional French seasoned lentils. It costs us .67 of a euro for a meal for TWO and DH gives it a 5 every time. Take that lentil-haters. I agree with Frugal Scholar--we're never going to stop eating lentils--we buy them in bulk and stockpile them.

I also agree with you that looking ahead, making cuts seems like a sacrifice at first, but you learn quickly that it's not really painful at all--it's the anticipation of doing things differently that's the hardest. Cut out that sense of entitlement and anticipatory fear and being cheap can actually be a lot of fun.

Yup, it's an easy fix speaking as a landlord myself. Sweeten the deal and rent it for fair market value to up his rent. Don't insult them by finding a crappy tenant though. Suggest that YOU do the legwork and show the apt for them, just have them do the ad listing. Then make moving out a CONDITION of a sign lease. Problem solved. Talk landlord and you'll please a landlord.

@Jason - Find someone to replace you. That's what I've done when I have had to break leases.

OK, so here's a question for the board. I want to move into a much cheaper place. Currently, I pay 750/mo for a guest house near my work in Burbank. That's the "special rate" because I'm friends with the landlords. The problem is, that when talk of leaving, they get all Butt-hurt because I've got such a "sweet deal" already. I really want to cut my expenses without burning bridges. Any ideas on how to navigate this minefield?

Hey Jacob,

Have you ever thought of starting a commune, or some physical equivalent to this blog? Some place that people who want to retire early can go to associate with and get support from like-minded people? A "frugal-topia"?

My DH and I have been (fairly extreme--is that a concept) savers for some time now. We did this, first, because of job insecurity, and next, because we wanted to help our kids graduate debt-free. You are so right about the difference an early start makes.

The other thing, though, is that I know we can make it on one salary, if the need arises. And if we both lose our jobs, well, we can travel in Asia for a few years.

So we face the future with perhaps less fear than others.

PS We love lentils and will never give them up!
