I am with you that price is not the only consideration when purchasing something. One of my gauges of how successful we've been in buying useful things is how much "stuff" we will donate or trash when we move next week. @Scott - great analogy with the Tonka truck, I wish I still had the one I played with, b/c the one my son got as a gift last Christmas is mostly plastic, with only a metal dump bed. They will buy a cheap lawnmower and replace it every year or two. Frugal will pay more upfront for the better higher quality lawnmower that will be handed down to their kids when they pass away. Frugal is simply a recognition of true value and how it makes your life better. Frugal was a Tonka truck made from metal that lasted over 30 years. Cheap is the product they sell now under the same name that breaks in a few months at best. To me cheap is someone who doesn’t understand value they only look at price. They will buy a cheap lawnmower and replace it every year or two. Frugal will pay more upfront for the better higher quality lawnmower that will be handed down to their kids when they pass away.

Frugal means finding the best price on beer and/or drinking less. Cheap means you happily drink my beer and never return the favor or offer me one of yours. How do you define the terms? I too am annoyed by all the time/space given to this issue. I haven't fully worked out my thoughts on this. But I think calling people "cheap" is just a type of name-calling (ditto for "liberal" or "feminist" or others) designed to put them on the defensive.
