Thank you all for the comments, emails, and for taking a look at the In The Trenches site. Re: mail. There are just so many things we take to be part of “normal” life that are really a biproduct of whatever choices we make. When I first moved to this house I asked about the garbage bill and was told there was no garbage bill. I was so excited until it dawned on me days later that no one was going to pick up the garbage. Hmmm… Another thing to figure out.

I remarked to dh last week that we hardly receive mail anymore…I didn’t really consider it as ‘freedom’ until reading this, but it is; we are finally in control.

My comment refers to postal mail only. Online financial statements are ideal for my purposes, but they’re not always available. (And they’re not a deal breaker, otherwise I would only use services that do provide online-only correspondence.)

ERE, what is your postal mail situation? Delivered right to your doorstep, or the facility where you rent has a box for each renter?

I endeavor to reduce my Mail To Zero. Haven’t ever gotten there, but have been damn close. I believe I’m down to about 3 or 4 items mailed to me per quarter (with a couple extra in February each year as the US tax statements roll in).

Thank you for sharing your story, I look forward to visiting your site. I am trying to learn these lessons while we still have a high income, but it’s true what you say about the high income earners. We are surrounded by other high income earners who are spending a ton on vacations, houses and the one that is endless….kids activities. I just had a ‘talk’ with my 7 and 9 year old today that every time they beg to dine out or buy something is more time Daddy spends at work away from us and I think they understood it quite well. The old me would have never gone there less they feel ‘different’ from the other families, but it’s perhaps why the country is where it is because we don’t want to be honest about what spending out of control really means.
