Do most people realize that a Computer usually costs more then a TV?
Especially with a M$ Operating System?

Though when it comes to subscriptions, interenet is cheaper than cable, and you can be a lot more productive and earn your entire life's living with a computer and with a seek to learning mind.

My wife being disabled and bed ridden sometimes, really relies on TV to help entertain. We both can't just hop out and go run around and do things, and even reading causes her some issues, so that's a bummer too.

Now that we are in the RV too, our internet is SHITE. I get 1.5gb per 24hrs/$60 MONTH! At best speeds are around 500-800kpbs, though they say(Nomadisp) that it goes up to 1.5kpbs...hardly. It gets throttled down to 768kpbs after a measly 250mb, like watching a few shows on streaming etc.

We are thinking fo dropping it soon, but it does come in handy for my love of gaming and other handy stuff.

@Unplug - For a 4% withdrawal rate of the portfolio, it needs to be 25x annual expenses or 300x monthly.

Hi Jacob,

I want to make sure I understand clearly, since I'm in beginner mode. You say, "$45 / month requires capital assets of $13,500 to back them on a sustainable basis...".

Does that mean, in your example, one would need $13,500 to generate enough interest/income to pay for the $45, without reducing the capital?

Thanks!

"Dollhouse" is on regular TV. It is set in the not very distant future when people have figured out how to do interesting things in programming the human mind. We're always trying to figure out what is the whole story on what is going on and why and who is involved with what. It started off slow because the network said the original opener was too dense, but they just cut the show after season 2, so now it's extra dense because they're trying to fit everything in.

What is "Dollhouse"? Is it only on cable?

I'd pay for good auto racing coverage, like SpeedTV and ESPN2 used to have, but it's just not available now. Now it's NASCAR or nothing and since NASCAR is on broadcast TV (usually), there's no point in a pay channel.

There's especially no point in pay channels that show advertising! Grrr.

Consequently, we have an extensive DVD library housed in a pair of changers. and you have the movie/show you want to watch, when you want to watch it.

I think you'll find some more shows at Clicker.com, which searches the Internet as a whole for shows. Some shows not on Hulu.com are found at other websites by using Clicker.com.

My only wish is that they'd subtitle/caption the shows. Hulu.com seems to be the only one that subtitles *some* of the their shows. Other video sites don't seem to subtitle at all. Very frutrating for a hard-of-hearing fellow.

They are user-uploaded videos, so the quality isn't spectacular, sometimes the videos are removed, every single episode isn't necessarily available, and sometimes whatever site is hosting a particular video is too slow to make it worthwhile.

I also think from time to time about how ridiculously huge actors' salaries are. I've thought often of foregoing watching any movie or tv show, b/c I think it's immoral to make millions of dollars for providing mindless entertainment, when there are people working as teachers, laboratorians, nurses, electricians, plumbers, childcare and eldercare providers who are doing much more important things and contributing to society in much better ways and are getting paid less in one year than an actor gets paid per episode.

What are actors, anyway, except people who can lie really, really well?

37 shows? That's like another full time job every week.

We follow 5 shows (via DVR usually) - Big Bang Theory, 24, Lost, The Office and Flashforward. My son loves Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Since all the shows we watch regularly are on broadcast TV we're ditching satellite at the end of the month and buying a DVD recorder instead. We'll just about pay for it with the first month savings.

I don't begrudge people that watch TV, like someone above said, everyone spends their leisure time differently. My beef is that people complain about having "no money" but pay $100/month for cable and $100/month for their Iphone or texting.

There are tons of shows on that website. Now, all the episodes aren't necessarily there, and sometimes videos are removed, and sometimes they play too slowly to make it worthwhile, but I kinda prefer it for certain shows, like The Simpsons, because hulu.com only shows the latest 6 or 7 episodes of the season. Everything else is just clips. But this website has user-uploaded videos (therefore the quality isn't spectacular), so you can see all the old episodes from past seasons.

I haven't had a TV for several years, and the previous several years before that, I didn't have cable. I do watch quite a bit of TV shows off the internet, but unless I'm ill or depressed, I'm usually doing something, like knitting or crocheting, while the show is on for background noise. I live alone. Sometimes I'll put the radio on or pandora.com.

I just think it's hilarious that cable has almost become a necessity. Over at Get Rich Slowly, there was a post about calling the cable company to get a better rate, and only a few of the comments were from people mentioning getting rid of cable altogether. It's b/c it's become an addiction that the cable companies can get away with charging so much.

Hulu will be charging for subscription in 2010. So unfortunately the website will not be staying free.

I don't have a TV - been watching all of my shows on the youtube / hulu / hulu-like sites.

I have, but do not watch cable TV for the following reasons:

Mainstream News Media is designed to cause the forming of specific opinions on news events. It is not an unbiased reporting, but rather a presentation of the news story to benefit the political agendas of the upper elite.

The television programs depict crime and violence and numb the viewer to accept that behavior as normal in our society, and it promotes popularity of living life without ethics, compassion, or civility.

It promotes a vulgar sense of behavior as a "popular" lifestyle. Examples of this are disrespect for our elders, unfaithfulness to our spouses, ridicule of our leaders, and living our lives in a gross and lower class manner, thereby having no respect for ourselves.

It elevates sports personalities to a deity-like status, and fosters a sense of awe towards them, even in the event they may commit crimes or other offenses in the private lives, that become public knowledge.

It has its basis in consumer attraction, with programing funded by corporations devoted to preying on the easily influenced public, through products that promise, but do not deliver on the promises. While the reasonable individual is responsible to reject the advertisements for products, we all know this fails and the purchaser dials the toll free number and orders the item(s). Such is the result of 24/7 in-your-face and ears campaigns and credit cards.

I will end by stating my opinion that television viewing is a negative and possibly
dangerous activity.

It promotes a vulgar sense of behavior as a “popular” lifestyle.

The last few comments covered a lot of my thoughts on this. In my market, it seems that the cable and internet bundle is a better deal than either one separately.

It's easy to denounce the TV as evil, and certainly some seem to abuse it. To me, it's a very cost effective source of entertainment-- far less expensive than live shows. In my region, I live in pretty good location for walking/biking to essential services. Still, it's 9 miles round trip to the library, and 7 miles to the theater. If you drive that, you've likely lost the cost savings when compared to a $3-4 pay per view movie. If you bike it, you're out ahead, but, for example, this weekend, it's 20F, and under snow-- any hardy soul can do it, but it doesn't feel much like entertainment.

Comparing dollar for dollar, cable TV may be one of the better entertainment values. That doesn't mean it's right for everyone, it certainly isn't essential.

We all are not made out of the same mold...

Some can do without TV, some watch TV for only the educational shows, some watch TV no matter whats on, some watch TV for sports, some watch TV just to numb themselves from everyday trial and turbulations.

Then you have others in the world that TV is meaningless and they go out and sail a boat every weekend, or cycling, or bowling, etc.

Then you have others who won't watch TV but sit on the computer 18 hrs a day....

But the real question is, not whether we can get TV show for free or not but, are we all getting TO hooked on internet/computer/iphones/blackberrys/googlechrome/facebook/twitter, etc. basically anything electronic? and FAST?

you should look in to building an HDTV antenna. It was a fun project and we pick up about 11 different channels. Between that Hulu and Netflix you have everything you could want. This system doesn't really save you a ton of money though since most cable packages will throw in internet for basically nothing, but if you are paying just for internet alone it costs almost the same as cable+internet.
