Even though the rents are more expensive than they would be in a place without public transportation, I'd put a monetary value on not having all of the headaches which come with car ownership, such as maintanence, insurance, other drivers, etc. Not owning a car is great, although it’s true that many people live somewhere where it simply isn’t possible. For me 8 miles is the maximum that feels comfortable, while 12 is the maximum that’s enjoyable. 8 should be very good for you, about 30 min. ride.

One thing I noticed was that initially my legs got bigger to adapt to the new load and after a while they got smaller and leaner to get more efficient.
