There's a community in Missouri like this named Dancing Rabbit. You can read all about it online--they even have videos of natural building and what life there is like. Off-the-grid, community-based but not a commune, strawbale and cob small houses. It looks like a dream.

This reminds me of Prince Charles's New Urbanist community called Poundbury:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poundbury

That's the type of community I'd like to live in. Not so much the Thoreau-esque cabin in the woods-seems to asocial to me. But a place like that where your neighbors, groceries, entertainment, parks, etc. were all within walking distance. Sounds wonderful.

It's very important to have dreams. If you don't dream anymore, there's something seriously wrong.

I wonder what will be the next one.

Your dream sounds a lot like mine. A compact maintenance-free bungalow with some land, in a clean area, as self-sufficient as practical, with friends living nearby, for an inexpensive and car-less existance.
Doing only what I want and am passionate about, for all the years that I have left.

Now getting my gf ready for this is something enterely else.

I'll continue to read your blog for inspiration and useful ideas.

I'm not sure if this qualifies as my dream or not, but if I were to come into money I would buy a nice piece of property - probably about 2-3 acres - build a well-designed house no bigger than 1500 sq ft and try to live off our land as much as possible - including vegetables, an orchard and chickens - maybe goats too. I guess for now I'll keep living in suburbia and working towards FI.

I agree with Seth Miller - it would be nice to start a little community like you describe where neighbors are actually neighbors and not just people who live next door.

I'm kinda of the same mind: I've traveled and now am content to stay put. BTW, I own 40 acres outside of the town proudly nicknamed Little Beirut. My plan is to settle there in a small, earth-sheltered home.

I'm surprised communities aren't popping up like this, with small houses, land to work, filled with like minded people. I guess there isn't a lot of money to made with them so that is probably why.

Yeah! Been far too long to not be able to comment - dating back to the end of year when I got a new (used) laptop - but how fitting now that you are officially retired from having to punch in on any others clock but Jacob, Inc. CONGRATULATIONS!

I whole-heartedly agreed with FB as well: for the most part, the long term PF bloggers are B-O-R-I-N-G (except GRS - maybe because he seems like such a genuinely real guy). But you still hold #1 spot :-).

You are invited (and any other ERE readers) to visit my off the grid spot in No. Calif. esp. anyone interested in building - I have opinions on so many do's' and don'ts :-) I have found it very difficult to keep it Simple. The short story: Been building this place for 5 years (most of that time working full-time in SF). Now that I am on sabbatical for at least a year & now that my place is just about "finished" the question is "What's Next?" - and not sure if I want to own property again. While I am on this property (who knows how long it could take to sell), want to build my own version of a Tiny House (10 x 12')in modular panels - have a hard time believing it could cost much $.

I keep going back to idea of living in Portland - in my opinion it's the best blend of city and country. Ideally, would like to live in place where car is not necessary (have not owned one in about two years but rely on others to bring me supplies) - and water is going to be a major issue in not so distant future. Thanks for adding Unconventional Ideas to Blogroll - I had misplaced & they remind me of all reasons why Portland so great.

It's good to have a dream and know what it is.

I still own the first house I bought, after renting in grad school and living with a relative after that. It's been nearly 17 years. It's 90 years old, the house, and less than 1400 square feet, cedar shingled, front porch, the usual city house.

Two years ago I bought a 650 square foot cabin in the country a hundred miles away. I did that because my passion is hiking, while my work as a lawyer is in the city. I had thought for the whole winter (when I daydream best) that I'd rent out the city place for a few years, since I'm leaving law, and see about selling it.

Nope. I just came back from spending 20 of the last 23 days in the country, and when I saw my city house again today it was love at first sight.

I don't have mortgages on either house -- prudent planning -- and I'm growing an orchard on the country place. My expenses are about $15,000 a year, plus repairs, many of which I am learning to do myself. I grow much of what I eat, and shop at farmers' markets for the rest.

I decided no more dreaming for now. A time will emerge -- dreaming for another day down the road -- when I will see another way to do this.

It's good to have a dream. It's also good to know when you have it.

That's a great dream to shoot for (I may have to blog about this later). I have a somewhat similar one to yours. We're planning to get some land and modify an older house to be a little more self-sustaining. We've also considered a sustainable prefab homes. Although before we get there we're working on financial independence. It's a slow and steady game but we're playing it.
