"I tend to find spectator sports quite boring."

I like to watch fights, because I learn a little. But for the rest of the sports, I don't like to watch neither to play. I prefer more useful things. If I do something for its own sake, I don't see how it may be fun. Of course you are not playing with boats only to have fun.

Great story and postings!

The real joy of sailing is the ability to completely clear your mind. Sailing requires enough "work" to keep you busy. There is a spiritual beauty in turning off the engine and being clever enough to navigate using the forces of nature.

Teamwork? Oh I suppose. Yet I am both a loner and an introvert. I own my own boat and constantly sail single-handed. I'm a fan of doing my own thing on my own schedule. Dropping anchor in a lovely place and staying as long as I wish to sail. You may dictate the funds you want to spend to buy the boat and support the boat. In Anguilla, I met a retired couple that claimed to live on only $6,000 per year. Too frugal for my taste! I have friends that spent over $250,000 on their sailboats, some spending another $100,000 to campaign the boat for racing. That's just way too silly for my logical mind.

Getting away from the madness of the civilized world, away from traffic, noise and stressed people is a wonderful way to spend time.

One accurate way to describe sailing is hours of boredom interrupted by moments of sheer terror. Yes, my sailing log book has a few of those entries about selling my boat. Yet still she remains with me 12 years later.

I once compared my boat ownership with a collegue's car lease. For the same amount of money, I had an older car, a boat, boat maintenance, and yacht club membership with a social calendar. It's all about the choices you make.

One summer on my bay, I carefully watched the activity level of the cheap, old sailboats on the inexpensive town moorings. I compared that against the newer, bigger, prettier, and more expensive yacht club boats on the other side of the channel. No surprise at all. The less expensive boats were OUT sailing and being enjoyed all the time. The more expensive boats? Who knows? I just figure that those boats had more systems that required professional mntc and likely needed more crew to handle a day on the water.

Sail Fast! Live Slow!

Hockey is fun to watch, in person especially since you can see the entire ice surface and really see the plays developing. TV just misses too much, not to mention the game is so fast the cameramen have to be really good to keep up. You're right though, I'd rather play.

Living in a sailboat might be an alternative to living in a RV. I thought maybe that's where you were going with this. I remember watching a PBS show about a family who raised their kids on a boat, traveling all over the world to different ports-of-call. It was very inspiring to me, to live the unconventional life. I saved the bookmark of the show, but the website doesn't do the TV documentary justice.

J/105? I'm jealous, it must be quite a ride!

Frugal and racing will never mix if you are the owner. If you're crew its fabulous. If you crew with the right owner you'll often even get a meal out of the deal.

Have a blast Jacob!

@basil - I'm not a loner, I'm an introvert. I can deal with people fine as long as I don't have to make chitchat. This is probably also why I enjoy racing more than cruising. Anyway, sailing is like children, it costs as much as you can afford. Of course the crew is more like being the aunt and uncle. You don't pay for the boat but you get to have fun anyway. If it's your own boat, I am staking my hopes on the series of books by Don Casey: basically DIY boat repair. I guess crewing can be a bit like working for the man, but it's in the same spirit as a team of football players are working for the quarterback. The need is mutual.

@Phil - I used to feel the same way and until recently I only did individual sports. I really got into the idea of "team", ghastly as it sounds, hehe, when I started playing hockey when I was 31. The idea of passing to anyone with a better angle/shot was just another thing to optimize instead of trying to score myself. It kinda complexified the game if that made sense. (Or maybe it's because I'm really good at passing and below average on one on one :-P ) Actually, the guy who referred me to the racing boat was a team mate of mine who recommended me due to being a good teamplayer ;-) On a big boat, of course, it is all about team coordination. Maybe the reason I enjoy it is that I have been saved from "team building exercises".

I don't understand this fascination with sailing. It doesn't sound like a frugal hobby at all. First of all, sailing is the epitome of teamwork. Not for loners. To me, getting all worked up especially in a yacht race, seem too much like working for "The Man". Just can't understand it.

I can't stand team sports, at any level… I'll watch them with a few special others to have the comradery, but other than that...

But sailing, now that I can work with… (I've owned two sailboats thus far. Both were smaller daysailer types, a 15' Skip Jack one design and the South Coast 21'. Had many a tiny adventure on those.)

Enjoy your sailing. It's one of those great activities in the world.

I used to agree with Mark Twain that baseball is 12 minutes of action packed into two and a half hours.

Properly coached baseball is like watching a chess game between two masters. Except that you get to watch it on the first beautiful spring day, on the fresh grass, underneath the sunshine, with the cold beverage of your choice.

That's before you get to the real benefit of spectator sports: community integration and, to (hopefully) bring this back to the subject of your article, easier networking.

@hickchick - Especially not baseball. On the other hand, I have not taken the time to understand the game beyond the idea that it's about hitting a ball with a bat and running around in a circle everybody 15 minutes or so ;-) Hockey, which I actually understand playing it myself, might work. I can't imagine watching is better than playing though.

Not even baseball? I imagine if you took the time, baseball would really appeal to you. Try college though. The majors and even the minors are just too expensive.
