Jacob - just remembered there is a full-service "woodshop" right down the street from where I live. They teach you and let you use all their tools for a small fee. Or, you can not be taught and just use all the tools - I think it's a membership, but it is literally within 5 minutes of here (driving).

Walking maybe 10 or 15 minutes, passed it when walking the dog about two weeks ago - can't remember the name however...Sawdust?

I like this. everything is for sale (or giveaway) at some point in time. for me this is true because I don't own anything. God owns it. Sometimes he directs me to give it to someone else that needs it.

I've made almost 1k decluttering my "stuff" - including DVDs.

eBay has a good thing right now with .99 free listings.

I think most of what I own I can get rid of (ala I am going to live on a boat or something) and it's just a mental matter being realized as an economic matter with sunk costs and no need for a return, but only as a bonus.

Free clothes - Savers is where I donate.

@Jacob, I didn't know that about the pennies. I have been saving my pennies since age 5. When my wife saw the collection she bought me a wooden treasure chest to keep them in. So, I have this kind of ultra-heavy treasure chest full of pennies laying around. Last weekend, I decided to get rid of it-- decluttering.... Good thing I didn't actually clear it out yet. The treasure is mine!

My husband has just gotten into making his own laundry detergent. Instead of purchasing laundry soap from 50-cents to $2.00 a gallon, he is realizing he can make it for 15-cents a gallon. We reuse the old laundry detergent bottles and fill them up with his home-made detergent.

Do you have any suggestion for giving away clothing? I usually drop my clothes off at the Planet boxes, but I've heard they don't always make it to the intended recipients. I really need to get rid of some clothes!

This post is an eye opener for a tools & books collector. Interesting emotions crop up when looking at value of unused vs used tools & books. Pride of ownership comes into play. History - A 100 year old pitch fork from Grandpa, etc. My biggest frustration is not being able to find things quickly. I have the space, time & resources to organize my collection, but I am not sure how to get started.

I am going to learn how to build an Access database. Perhaps with a good overview of my collection, I will find things to downsize.

I have a collection of National Geographic mags that go back to 1900. Also most copies of Mother Earth News.

@Jon - When the metal value of the penny exceeded $0.01, we started collecting pennies. When the metal value of the nickel ... a year later the treasury made a law that forbade export of more than $10.00 in pennies and forbade remelting for scrap. Currently, pennies are a hard currency like junk silver coins :-)

@Kevin M - Most importantly a rack for my PV panels. Of secondary importance is a roof replacement. The material comes to around $500-$700, but the labor is several thousands. I thus figure I'd do it myself... eventually. I also want to make a box for my mini drill press.

Insurance Izzy, I have a ton of books I will never read again either. But the personal value of them is rather large. I don't know that I could get rid of them, as I did question it some months ago.

I did list some of them on Half.com and some sold. But I was amazed at the depreciation value of books if they do not hit the much sought after titles. So, they turned out better to keep.

Then I had those in excellent condition but did not hold total personal/emotional value so I donated those to the 'friends of the library'. It will be stocked in the new 10K sq. foot library they are building in our library.

Hmmm... those of high value may just need to keep staying in my collection.

Of course, i am becoming rather fond of the Amazon Kindle app for the iPad - Reading Warren Buffet's Snowball I bought for $9.99. So what happens when the iPad becomes outdated??? Eeks!

Joe! - can I buy that camera equipment? My mom is an avid photographer and I've been trying for years now to convince her to quit, "retire", and do "full-time" photography.

I was shopping around for a nice camera for her 50th bday, which is next year.

Jacob has my email, maybe we can work out a good deal!.

Still reading the rest of the comments...

Its really hard to get rid of stuff sometimes. I have a huge book collection. Most of the books I either want to read again, or I know I won't be able to sell it, so why not keep it?
The last apprentice on there had some amazing sells with his camera equipment. If he sold it for that much, I don't want to think about how much it cost in the first place.

I only have 1 DVD and I'm in that movie so I'm not getting rid of it. I think I have a couple cds in a box somewhere. I might as well get rid of them since I'm obviously not listening to them. We have a storage area off our balcony where I have a couple of boxes that I need to go through and purge.

I have a lot of clothes that I can no longer wear. If I haven't started losing significant weight by the end of summer I should probably go ahead and get rid of those. I never buy clothes but I still seem to end up with a surplus of them.

I sold some DVDs and books on Amazon after Jacob's first blog about it about a year ago. Made about $250. Probably need to see if there's anything else hiding around the house.

I still have a box of CDs, but they are hard to get rid of. I'm trying to rip some of them into digital files on the computer before I eliminate.

@Jacob - what kind of stuff are you planning to build in your woodworking hobby? I'd be interested in hearing more about that as I'm reviving it as a hobby myself.

I recently moved across country. That provided a good impetus to downsize my CDs, DVDs and books. I'd say about 90% of them are gone now. I do miss them on occasion (especially the books), but it was nice being able to shop for an apartment without having to worry about where to store all those.

I'm pretty much done buying CDs at this point. I prefer to keep all my music on my computer. I'm pretty much done with DVDs too. I'll probably stick to renting or maybe break down and get a netflix subscription if I ever go on another movie kick.

I love books so I'm sure I'll be getting more of those, but I think I'm going to be much more selective about the books that I choose to buy and keep. I'm going to limit these to frequently used books and books that could be easily enjoyed by company.

I don't have anything up for sale, but I did just have a first (and pleasant) experience with using Freecycle.org to offer a great set of cookbook magazines I couldn't give to just anyone. Now I know they will get awesome use out of it because they REALLY wanted them. :)

One of my best decluttering tasks was getting rid of cash.

Like many people I collected spare change & put them in a money box. Where they would sit depreciating. Except, I had a separate money box for every type of coin (8 different coins here in the UK) I paid in just under £70 worth of coins into my bank account & freed up half a shelf in my cupboard.

I have visited friend's houses who have 5 litre demi johns full of coins, which must have hundreds of pounds worth of coins just sitting there.

I'm sure Jacob will find this amusing: I genuinely used to think, "what is the point of a 1p coin? It doesn't buy anything!" I used to take all the small denomination coins out of my wallet because I just didn't use them, mostly out of laziness. I couldn't be bothered to count it out to a shop keeper.

I rarely use cash now, but what I do use is in my wallet, where it is much easier to tell if I have a surplus building up.
