Awesome! A modern Diogenes- the Greek philosopher.
When Diogenes saw a boy drinking from his hands at the fountain he reached in his knapsack and pulled out his cup, throwing it away. "I have let a child best me in frugality!" 400 BCE

@Piper - We carry enough for a few guest, but not enough for a lot. When we have "too many" (which very rarely happens) one of them will be kind enough to bring more "equipment".

I had a minimalist kitchen once where all the dishes were made by me. The trouble with that was that one day I wanted a guest to come over and I didn't have dishes for that guest to eat off of. So I had to run down to the thrift store and get more plates and stuff.

I've read your blog for a while and you are always informative. This recycled post (appreciate that actually) is no exception but I also find your approach and delivery VERY humorous. Perhaps it is just the way you shine the light on our collective folly. Thanks for that.

Essentially, the same rules as camping apply to your home kitchen? Camping gear you wouldn't pack 12 extra plates in case you needed an extra for guests!

I lived with lawn chairs in my living room for a semester because I didn't have furniture, didn't want to get any for one semester, and my parents weren't using the lawn chairs during the winter.

I go tmade fun of a lot, but our chairs had 2 built-in cup holders each ;)

@Ralph - It depends. Not having a lot of stuff makes it easy to move. This was important in my career and is important in DWs. It allows us to relocate without much stress---they say that moving house is almost as stressful as having a family member die, but not for us. Also, all these little things add up. Without them we fit in well in small places.

I suggest fondue might be made using an ethanol burner which you can make out of two empty beer cans and a small pot? Haven't tried it, but I bet it'd work.

Recently discovered your blog. You are impressive but I have my doubts about simplification. If you already have equipment, why not keep it. We have a fondue pot from the 70's. Maybe twice a year we use it but I don't know how we would enjoy fondue without it. Don't think our life would be improved by throwing it out.

Don't have a pressure cooker as it doesn't travel too well and I am in Egypt for the past year and don't know when I will be leaving.

Did just pick up a cheap food processer though and it's been very handy for soups and things like hummus and juice. Will sell it when we leave.

Most of our kitchen stuff is included in our rent so we just leave it when we go but we do have enough plates and things for 5 people.

Those considering buying a pressure cooker might want to consider getting the Duromatic Thermal-cooker

http://thermalcooker.wordpress.com/2010/02/02/most-efficient-cooker-ever-green-edmonton/

It has double-walled construction, so it retains heat for up to two hours.

You might also consider getting a thermal cooker:

@Domagoj - We live in California, so we just go outside to BBQ when there are more people. It's sunny and warm most of the year.

I'm not more afraid of rice and beans than anyone should be of "meat and potatoes". Of course there's more to eating than just those two ingredients.

Wait a minute, do you ever have friends over? Are you not afraid that your diet is vitamin and essential mineral deficient? I mean, rice and beans are not exactly vitamin packed food.

By the way, I have only just stumbled upon your blog recently and have found it very interesting. Your outlook and approach to life is very refreshing.

@Matt - Indeed. There's only a finite amount of things to say about the subject of the blog, so rather than rehashing the same content over and over, e.g. "Here's my tenth post on opening an IRA and making mashed potatoes", the blogging software is now randomly promoting an old post to the front page every day.

Since it's not my job to blog, I think this is a good solution. Most posts are not time-dependent---for example, this post is as valid now as it was in 2007---so new readers can benefit from old posts, whereas old readers will gravitate towards the forums where most of the [new] action is.

Although we have not gone the minimalist route, my wife uses a crockpot (slow cooker) quite often. Low energy and simple to use for an entire dinner.
