I'm very fond of the exercise pyramid depicted here: http://thesolutionpost.com/exercise-king

Of course, I'm a bit older than most of you folks and I don't have any "performance" goals -- I just want to stay healthy with the least amount of effort.

Pavel's books are amusing, and I do love my kettlebells.

Adm Stockdale was an amazing man - I first read an essay by him regarding being a POW and realizing that Philosophy was more important to him than Calculus at that particular point in his life. He was an apologist for Stoicism.

He and his wife were awesome people and I try to read anything he wrote - the fact that he had major physical issues after his POW internment and yet still lived a very full life after that is also admirable.

Everything in moderation. As for your health, I have done cardio and weight lifting now for 4 years, and its made a huge difference, but the biggest reason is, like you say, I am intense while I am doing the workouts. Yeah, I use gloves, but that's because I didn't like the calluses and I got the gloves very cheap. I also got and use P90X, but again, I got the set as cheaply as possible along with some supplementary DVDs at yard sales for $1 each. The routine and structure helps me, so why shouldn't I use that routine? And protein powders? I started using them last year, but again, I bought in bulk, and used only at optimal times, it costs me about $0.50/day. And I have even gotten unopened canisters of the stuff at yard sales for almost nothing. I don't blow my money on other things, whereas this helps me keep my health expenses down, so why not spend maybe $100 over a year? But I agree - its not what I buy that makes me better, its the effort I put into it. Buying the latest gizmo from an infomercial isn't going to fix your life, or your body, only you can do that.

Non-conformity is a great trait. Society is after profits - it's good to know when to escape the mass consumerism. You don't need fancy equipment, supplements or anything else to be healthy. Essentially all that is required is your own body.

What?!!? No P90X? No Insanity? No Intervals?!?
:-)
Pick up heavy things off the floor.
Sometimes, lift the heavy things over your head.
Eat more calories
The end.
