Jacob, it would be interesting to see how many readers have stored food, guns and ammo, underground shelters, contingency plans for relocation to a safer area, medical kits beyond the standard first aid stuff, stocks of firewood, or whatever. Gas masks? MRE's?
To start I have:

A tornado shelter (small for two people).
Bottled Water (6 months worth for drinking/cooking)
Freeze Dried Staples, beans, rice, pastas.
Guns: Primary defense is 12 GA Riot Shotgun, Smith and Wesson 357 Mag, M1911A1 Colt .45's (collection of them), 44 AMT Automag, to name a few. Ammo in good stockage for all.
A used but good condition ATV (all terrain vehicle).
I live in a secluded rural area of agriculture and livestock, where time has not degraded the American culture.
Plenty of cases of MRE's
Propane Stoves
M17 Gas Masks for self and wife-
Sleeping bags to -40 below.
etc.

@Knobby - I'd love to put a turret on the RV, preferrably a vortex cannon for knocking smaller cars out of the way, but DW won't let me ;-P

HSpencer - No need to apoligize, just different meanings from different people with different backgrounds and ways of living...

You can have hardcore survival in alot of situations - like I know of one person who actually has a raise gun turret on his property and 1000 gallons of buried gasoline. I would also call that 'hardcore' LOL

Corporate Barbarian,

I visited your blog and bookmarked it. Now that's what I am talking about!! Detailed and well thought out, doubtless through personal experiences along the way. We all need to use our heads and think out potential needs. I like to call it the "Five P's": Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance. When possible, prior to any trip I make, I like to sit down quietly the night before and mentally think through the route I am taking and the destination I am arriving at. I also keep a well stocked set of tools, some spare parts, etc, in the vehicle I am using. This can be applied to most any operation one undertakes. I especially like the water idea you have. In several parts of the area here, the water is not that good taste wise, and having some bottled water in an ice chest makes for a happier trip. Plus, when you price bottled water in a convenience store, it makes your head spin! Thanks for letting me know about your blog.

@Corporate Barbarian - Wow! I'd say you're a couple of orders of magnitude better prepared than I am. What do you keep at your house? (you know, so I can loot it ;-D .)

While I'm not a "survivalist", I do prepare for potential emergencies. I'm not talking about end-of-the-world, post apocalyptic scenarios, but more run-of-the-mill disasters that we've all come across, like flat tires, blackouts, hurricanes, and blizzards. I try to anticipate smaller inconveniences, too, like losing a button, or a paper cut. The myths and the future post inspired me to share some of my preparations on my own blog. I also enjoyed your take on survival.

Knobby, sorry for the misleading term I used. Blame it on my military background, where we used that term to mean a "no non-sense, tried and true, void of speculation and the abstract", to approach a mission.

As in: "Taking a hardcore approach" to a problem.

My 32 years in the Army has corrupted me in many ways from expressing myself in clear terms! LOL.

@HSpencer, I guess it all comes down to defintion of words, IMO according to the terms you wrote as 'hardcore survival' I would just call them as parts of a 'personal secession.'

'hardcore survival' to me would be being stranded in a rubber raft in the middle of the Northern Atlantic ocean in November with no radio, no gps, no food, no water...

Knobby, I use the term "hardcore survival" as follows:

a. Embracing the reality that something is indeed very wrong with our future, requiring us to inquire into it, and take whatever small measures are available to us to lessen the impact.

b. Preparation for the worst, as best we can.

c. Removing ourselves from the "herd" instincts, and thinking for ourselves, using the best information that is available.

I agree with Jason. Let's pass on the conspiracies, and cover the "known" things in survivalblog stuff.

We can cover the reptilains in another life.

We already know about the Banksters.

Sort of tired of the UFO's.

Let's do hardcore survival instead. We know the other stuff is comming anyway.
