ERE and traveling are not mutually exclusive. One could pursue both goals either simultaneously, or even travel extensively once financial independence is reached. After all, in retirement, one is not limited to two weeks of vacation per year.

Home Exchange: If your home is in a hot locale for tourists, trade for short term lodging elsewhere.

Couch Surfing: Offer up your home first to establish a reputation, then stay on someone else's couch in the city of your choice.

Staying in Hostels: It's not just for college students any longer. Hostelworld.com is a good place to book online. Elderhostel.com specializes in older travelers.

Germany

Munich: Perhaps best known for its Oktoberfest festivities in late Sept-early October. A historical, clean, and beautiful city, easily traveled by foot and subway. A tour of the BMW factory is an absolute highlight, even for those not in love with cars.

Italy

Naples: While the city itself is not well known as a tourist hot spot, it is a fantastic jumping off point for the following locations: Capri, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and the Amalfi Coast (Sorrento). Approximately 1-2 hours by train from Rome, also has its own regional airport.

Poland

Krakow: Some call Krakow the "new" Prague. Krakow's town center is very colorful, large, and picturesque. Poland is not yet on the Euro so the dollar still does well here. The Wieliczka Salt Mine (20 min bus ride from downtown) is worth a visit.

United States
Washington

Seattle: A great jumping off point for enjoying beaches, water, mountains, and whale watching. Regionally famous art, music, and aviation museums.
