- So are you going shopping today?
- Nah, I’m going to stay at home and read my book.
- What book could be more fun than shopping?
- My bank book!
Anyone else not joining the mayhem today?

I’m staying home and enjoying my day off with my family. No cooking or shopping for me.
I am at home helping family today with various items and in support of buy nothing day, I opened a CD to save some money to drive a negative purchases – in effect. Also, I will watch some of the crowds in the shopping zones around town for high entertainment opportunities.
“Buy nothing day” is sort of useless if you just go out and buy things the next day.
I can’t think of anything worse than fighting crowds to spend my hard earned money. I’m definitely not buying anything today and that includes Internet shopping.
I think a lot of what will be bought today is not needed. Not going out to shop today therefore does not necessarily mean it will be bought tomorrow. It’s not like a “buy no gas to hurt the oil companies”-day which I would say is silly.

I agree Jenn
I may stay home all day. It’s possible that I might go to Toys R Us to see if the swing set in still in stock for $74.00. It’s already gone online. Therefore, its probably not in the store.
Nope not me. There’s nothing we need although I will say that missing “Black Friday” is a first in this household. We have been found camping on the sidewalk in the wee hours in the past outside various stores. For what? I don’t remember!
Heavens no. We hate to shop on a good day, much less a crazy one like today.

Buy a gift that actually MEANS something.
We stayed home. In the morning, my daughter put together some creative gifts for her friends (see my blog for description and pics).
Not being in the US, we don’t have Thanksgiving, Black Friday or Cyber Monday. The first is obviously traditional to your country but I am so glad we have neither of the latter two.
No shopping for me. I bought my fancy new TV last year in my PJs on Thanksgiving morning. Same deal as in-store, but no crowds and slow cashiers to deal with.
Normally I also buy nothing on “Buy Nothing Day,” and I enjoy it.
I use the day to visit with family members who are in town for the weekend and to recover from all the effort that goes into cleaning the house before our visitors arrive, cooking and serving the Thanksgiving meal, and cleaning up afterwords.
But this year was different. We were planning to get a new Apple laptop for one of our sons who makes a living doing high-level computer programming. (His old computer would take 20 seconds to complete a function that a new computer would do in 2 seconds. This ads up to a lot of lost time for something that you do hundreds of times a day.)
We found out that Apple was having a one-day special on the model that we were planning to buy. (People who follow Apple know how unusual this is.)
So, we trekked to the Apple store in the mall in the evening.
The Apple store, while crowded, was incredibly well organized. We were in and out in 5 minutes, new computer in hand.
As my other son commented, it was an amazingly positive retail experience.
I went shopping but not for Black Friday deals. I needed an oil change so I took advantage of having a day off during the week to go by and get one. During it, I walked over to the nearby K-Mart to get a few items that we needed. I had a pretty pleasant trip. It was not as crowded as the morning I am sure by 2PM or so when I went, and even though it was more crowded than usual, they had about 5 times the normal amount of registers opened.
I ended up having to stop by a Rite-Aid and Bi-Lo to get fabric softener (my wife is particular), but both of those trips were also pleasant as well.
I neglected to add that though I did avoid some shopping on the busiest road because of Black Friday, I did not completely avoid shopping because doing so gives it power over you, a different but similar power that comes over you when you must shop on Black Friday.
